Athens: Zeus' Temple

The thing that struck me the most about the ruins of Athens, is that they are literally right among the modern city. There is the ancient and the modern right next to each other. After thinking about it, of course it makes sense. The ruins were the city in ancient times. However, from a preservation stand-point, it seems odd.
